Med School day # 147:

I cannot believe I almost fell for this at school today: My professor was giving the first year medical students their first lecture on autopsies, and decided to give them a few basics before starting. "You must be capable of two things to do an autopsy. The first thing is that you must have no sense of fear." At this point, Professor Lance stuck his finger into the dead man's anus, and then licked it. He then asked all the students to do the same thing with the corpses in front of them. After a couple of minutes silence, they followed suit. What he said next made me laught my nosehairs off...

"The second thing is that you must have an acute sense of observation: I stuck my middle finger into the corpse's anus, but I licked my index."

Q&A with JON HURWITZ, co-writer of HAROLD & KUMAR GO TO WHITE CASTLE

What bonus features are on the DVD?

There are two editions of the DVD. The regular edition contains the movie everyone saw in theaters. The Extreme Unrated Edition instead has an edgier cut of the film with more nudity and more moments with the Extreme Sports Crew.

Both DVDs have a ton of special features. There's a "making of" featurette in which Bobby Lee interviews John Cho and Kal Penn as they drive around LA. There's a hysterical featurette called "The Art of the Fart" about the making of the Battleshits scene and another about the making of Harold's cartoon dream sequence. Also, there are a bunch of funny deleted scenes, including an alternate ending with Luis Guzman. There are set interviews with several members of the cast and crew. And there are three commentary tracks -- one with John, Kal, and the director Danny Leiner; one with the writers (myself and Hayden Schlossberg, along with the real Harold Lee); and one by Dan Bouchart (the real life skateboarder who played Extreme Sports Punk #1 -- the guy in the black skull cap). I believe that last commentary track is only found on the Extreme Edition.

Finally, the menus on the DVD feature brand new footage of John and Kal written specifically for the DVD. Funny stuff. Harold and Kumar fans definitely will not be disappointed by the DVD.

What is the importance of DVD sales in measuring the success of a film starring two Asian Americans?

The DVD sales will be EXTREMELY important in determining the success of this film starring two Asian Americans. While "Harold & Kumar" was already a success in some respects, because of its critical acclaim and because it doubled its budget at the box office, it still hasn't been profitable enough yet to show studio executives in Hollywood that movies starring Asian American leads will make them significant money.

The good news is that the jury is still out. Many movies today make the bulk of their money on DVD, instead of at the box office. If "Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle" can become a DVD hit, then that would send a HUGE statement to the powers that be in Hollywood. I've already been given assurance by the people at New Line that if the movie does well on DVD, then they will make our sequel "Harold & Kumar Go To Amsterdam." If that happens, you can expect to see a lot more studio films starring Asian American leads, because Hollywood studios always follow the money.

However, if the movie underperforms on DVD, it may be a long time before you see another studio picture starring Asian American leads. So buy the DVD and spread the word, because we are at an important turning point for Asian Americans in cinema. I've seen firsthand how much people of all races and backgrounds enjoy the antics of "Harold & Kumar," so I'm confident the fans can get the job done. They just need to be proactive.

What new projects are you working on?

Hayden and I are working on several new projects. In addition to "Harold & Kumar Go To Amsterdam," we have several other projects moving closer to production including "The Wingman," "The Gym Teacher," and an R- rated comedy we're writing for Eddie Murphy, called "John Blaze: Hip Hop Cop."

We'll also soon be looking at directors for the first movie Hayden and I are producing called "All You Can Eat," a comedy about the world of competitive eating, written by the real Harold Lee's roommate Josh Heald.

Thanks again for your support of "Harold & Kumar." We hope to be making a sequel within the next year or so. Let's cross our fingers.

O and i'm giving the following comment some major props.

sup, kumar.  (sorry for the long comment)

i decided to leave this on your page instead of just posting it on my own, for anonymity's sake.  i know you won't mind, because i'm basically thanking you guys for making this movie, because it got my my first date with this HOT, INTELLIGENT korean chick i know, who already got a man (what's that got ta do with me? right?).

i have now seen your movie three times.  yeah, i thought it would have been more by now, but you know how it is, planning things with asians.  at least three other trips fell through...and you know i would have gone every time.  at this point, i just offer anyone i know who has already seen it a free ticket if they're willing to see it again.  no, i'm not rich, i'm living off my fams like you, bro, putting life off and shmoking!

my last h and k evangelism effort:  so i was about ten minutes late, she was already somewhere in the theater, so i took five minutes out and talked to mark, the remarkable gentleman who sold me my ticket.  i started with the standard, "so have you...?"  no.  "do you want to?"  slow shrug, eehhhh.  "you don't like dumb comedies?"  he loves them.  so at that point i tell him this is my third time and i'm still extremely excited to be seeing it today.  i tell him there's a really cute chick waiting for me inside because of this movie.  he can't help himself, jumps at the bait.  i tell him he has a week and the offer extends to friends he trusts to be more honest than cheap.

and the crazy thing about this whole story is, i think i really might get the girl in the end, i AM planning to go back to the theater to see if i owe anyone anything, and i was wearing my one crappy white tee and my torn jeans and that just turned out to make her feel more comfortable around me.  oh yeah, and mark got to watch me walk out smiling and laughing in the company of a gorgeous, brilliant...sigh

SHE BANGS, SHE BANGS!

Hung          like         a               moose....

=================================================

ANYWAYS, this weekend was AWESOME. Thank you all for your help. As I was standing at Starbucks, rebuking the barista about how chai-tea lattes are not "Indian" or "Asian" or "oriental," I noticed that the boy had seen Harold and Kumar go to White Castle and was surprised at how good it was... So instead of pouring the hot chai-tea latte on him, I gave him a big manly hug and thanked for his support.

So besides smokin' some herbs this weekend, I caught up with my buddy (super White) the writer of Harold and Kumar go to White Castle *drum roll* ... Jon Hurwitz. Now, that's a nice Jewish boy you want to bring home to and introdue him to your aunties.

August 2, 2004

Dear Friends,

As you may or may not know, my movie "HAROLD & KUMAR GO TO WHITE CASTLE" opened this past weekend.  Due to the intense competition, as
well as a lack of awareness about the movie in many parts of the country, we were a little bit disappointed by our box office numbers.

However, the exit polls the studio received for the weekend were tremendous. The Internet word-of-mouth on the movie has been through the roof.  Our reviews were incredible!  (check out www.rottentomatoes.com and look up "Harold and Kumar"). And the movie only dropped 3% at the box office from Saturday into Sunday -- an unheard of figure.  Usually movies drop 30% or more from Saturday to Sunday.  Why did "Harold & Kumar" outperform so much on Sunday?

BECAUSE PEOPLE WHO SEE "HAROLD & KUMAR GO TO WHITE CASTLE" LOVE "HAROLD & KUMAR GO TO WHITE CASTLE."

The movie had such a strong Sunday because of people like you -- people who supported the movie by seeing it this weekend or by telling others how much they loved it.

In order for the movie to be the success we'd all like, Newline needs to see that Sunday's trend was very, very real.  That means, we need to have people show up at the box office this week (PARTICULARLY TODAY).

We need to prove that America wants to see our little movie starring two Asian American leads.

So, if you haven't seen the movie yet, I urge you to please see the movie ASAP -- like today.  YOU WILL LAUGH.  TRUST ME.

If you've seen the movie and plan to see it again, I urge you to see it again sooner rather than later.

And finally, please continue to spread the "Harold and Kumar" love to anyone you know who happens to enjoy laughing.  I have a feeling most of you know a few people who enjoy that sensation, so why not encourage them to have an hour and a half of laughter tonight?  They will thank  you/hug you for it.

Thanks again to all of you who have supported the film.  I truly appreciate it.

Love,

Jon H.
